Shipping and Transporting Fireworks Guidelines
Fireworks are an American favorite especially on the 4th of July, Independence Day. This day brings back memories of apple pie, sparklers, the local neighborhood parades that are still a part of today’s culture. Don’t forget the red, white and blue crazy outfits everyone wears to show their patriotic spirit. Finally at the end of the night after the shipping and transporting of the fireworks comes a fabulous display of color and loud resonating booms that shake the ground.
Shipping Fireworks – Hazmat
Shipping and transporting those fireworks safely takes time and coordination with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Hazardous Material Regulations (hazmat). The hazmat regulations allow the DOT to issue classification documents known as EX Approvals that are in accordance will all the Hazmat Material Regulations for shipping and transport of fireworks. EX Number Transporters must apply for an EX number, which is written consent, and is issued to ensure safe transportation of fireworks/explosives. You must have an EX number to ship and transport within the U.S. and this must be placed on the packaging and shipping documents. You can apply for the EX number here: On-Line Special Permit & Approval Application System.
Packaging Fireworks For Shipping
Packing fireworks and transporting fireworks takes special preparation. All packages containing explosives must have the following listed on the crate for transportation.
- The EX Approval Number (on package or shipping paper) with a hazardous label attached
- The proper shipping name (General Marking)
- UN I.D. number with the UN Packaging Specification Marking
PHMSA has additional resources for proper documentation on shipping your fireworks.
Shipping Fireworks – Safety
EX Approvals must be followed to ensure safety when shipping and transporting fireworks. It is the responsibility of the owner or company to adhere to these regulations. These safety guidelines are to ensure companies continue to operate in agreement with the required terms and conditions set forth by the federal government.
Enforcement and safety investigators from various federal agencies, including the DOT routinely conduct compliance and safety inspections. An EX Approval may be suspended or canceled if the performance of the holder fails to meet the required conditions. Make sure when you hire a carrier for your 4th of July fireworks display you can work together with them to make sure all federal guidelines are met before shipping.
